When John and I visited the Villa Medici, our ticket included entry to an exhibition of paintings inspired by Rome by former French Academy resident artist, Yan Pei-Ming.
Mr Pei-Ming was born in China but now lives in Dijon, France.
Pei-Ming favours a grey monochrome palette for his large format works as is obvious in his copies of two of Caravaggio's St Matthew paintings.
Here he has painted Pope John Paul II lying in state.
Other themes for paintings that ran along these stairs relate to Italian movies and political events.
The room at the top of the stairs featured three paintings inspired by the Roman Forum. Yan Pei-Ming's exhibition continues for only six more days (June 19th).
