Morandi at Mattia De Luca Gallery

If you were in Rome this spring you may have noticed this modest poster for the Mattia De Luca Gallery.

Piazza di Campitelli is near the Ghetto. The gallery is right across from the massive S. Maria in Portico in Campitelli.

When Bill and i walked into the gallery and saw this thrilling landscape we knew this show was going to be something special.

And it is special. Forty paintings and works on paper --

installed with space to focus on each work in turn.

The artworks come from private collections and were entirely new to us. 

We will have to return for a second look.

I was very taken with this sumptuous arrangement with its restrained palate.

Fans of Morandi's landscapes will not be disappointed.

I was surprised to see some darker works.

I had not seen dark paintings like these before. 

Fun to see a bouquet of flower paintings.

And how about this odd creature? Invites a good long look.

Be sure to see the works on paper downstairs.

Giorgio Morandi (July 20, 1890 -- June 18, 1964) left us so much to be thankful for.
