Gastone Novelli at MACRO

Bill and I were very pleased by MACRO's small exhibitions by individual artists.

It's always exciting to discover new artists. I loved this collage at first sight -- "Untitled", 1963. Collage on paper. It is by Gastone Novelli (Vienna, 1925 -- Milan, 1968).

We didn't know Novelli at all. This exhibit showed work from the 1950's and '60s. We could see his influence or affinity with many American artists -- Twombly, Rivers, Rauschenberg. ("Untitled", 1962. pencil and pastel on paper. Collection: MACRO)

"Il Cervello", 1957. Pencil, tempera, oil and collage on paper. Collection Ivan Novelli, Rome.
Four lovely works.
Detail of "Senza titolo (Untitled)",1960 -- top right corner.
The MACRO bookstore had a stunning collection of his work from the Italian publisher Sylvana Editore. Too heavy for our carry-on, we went straight back to our apartment and ordered it online.
